summer 2025 June 1-3

Sunday, June 1 began with a nice service at Elkton Presbyterian Church and then we returned from Maryland.  I ended up going to Richmond with MH to see EXTC.  I couldn't pass it up because they are a childhood favorite for him and I knew it would be a great experience.  EXTC is the current make-up of the late '70s, early '80s band XTC.  Very well crafted progressive rock music.  The only original XTC member was Terry Chambers on drums.

Monday, June 2 greeted me with a Blue Mystery Hero Day.  I was walking Moose around the block and got the idea to paddle the river.  I came home and checked the USGS meter in Palmyra.  It was a perfect 3.75 feet.  The oldest had to work, but my youngest agreed to join me if he could fish.  We got our gear together and were on the river at 12:30 pm.  He dropped his line in as soon as we started and he fished with worms for six of the six and a half mile float.  It was an extraordinary river day.  The crystal clear sky reflected off the water while we followed a bald eagle. We were able to paddle underneath his perch then watch him launch into the air, fly a little ways down river and perch again.  He repeated that three times before he soared away.  Meanwhile the boy hooked eight fish (a rate better than one fish per mile).  I think we counted one chub, two smallmouth bass, one largemouth bass, and four sunfish.  The smallmouth put up a good fight and the sunfish were beautifully colorful.  I also picked up a skipping stone at Pancake Bank that had fish eggs underneath it, that was a first for me.

The bald eagle is in the top center of this photo.

This eight inch largemouth bass was the biggest fish he caught on the trip.

Tuesday, June 3 was another Blue Mystery Hero Day.  I spent about four hours at Walnut Creek Park, Albemarle County, Virginia with my friend GB.  We walked 18 holes of disc golf playing the short tees (orange) to the long baskets.  I threw a 69 (+12).  The course is long and hilly making it a fairly legit hike as well.  We chilled out by the lake for an hour or so after we played.  Absolutely top notch day of disc golf.

Our tailgate spot in the empty parking lot across from the lake.
