Music Bath - Tony Allen / Jimmy McGriff / MMW

There have been three records receiving music bath listening sessions this week.  The music bath idea comes from Oliver Wendell Holmes, "Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body."

First up is Rejoice, Tony Allen and Hugh Masekela (World Circuit ry2020) recorded in 2010 and released ten years later, exactly 41 days prior to Allen's death.  Tony Allen, a Nigerian, died in Paris on April 30, 2020.   He had a prolific career as a drummer and composer.  Allen toured and recorded with Fela Kuti starting in the early to mid 1960s.  Together they created the afrobeat sound.  Tony Allen is an all-time favorite musician of mine.

Next is a Jimmy McGriff (ry1971 groove merchant international) album my friend C-Moore shared with me.  I picked it up on vinyl and it's a welcomed addition to my collection.  I'm not revealing the cover here, but if you're into record mining you should keep an eye out for this album.  The title Groove Grease and the description on the back of the cover says it all.

The third album is Medeski, Martin and Wood - Friday Afternoon in the Universe (ry1995 gramavision records).  I stopped by my buddy Matt's house yesterday afternoon.  It was a beautiful spring Friday.  We listened to a few songs from the new Butcher Brown release, then listened to Friday Afternoon in the Universe from start to finish.  After MMW we checked out some live Dogs in a Pile.  It was truly a perfect Friday afternoon in the universe and a great time to share my favorite MMW record with a friend and drummer.
