Icicles on a River Snow Day

We've been blessed with snow days in 2025.  Today, February 21, 2025, was another of those beautiful days.  The second Blue Mystery Hero Day on a Friday in a row, February 14 and 21.  Last week I hiked a few miles at Pleasant Grove and this week I put the kayak in the river for some paddling. It was the first time I have paddled the river with snow on the ground.  The Blue Mystery Hero sun made a 38 degree day feel real nice on the water.  The river always has spectacular surprises and this trip didn't disappoint.  Today's highlight was, without doubt, the icicles. The first few were a surprise, then they were all over the water's edge.  Pictures were hard to get because the best icicles were along the shore where the water was moving swiftly.  Getting close was tricky.  The best lesson learned is that you don't have a problem until you do. Sometimes perceived problems really aren't problems.

Rivanna River, Fluvanna County, Virginia - Bernardsburg (Crofton) to Palmyra 6.5 miles.  Perfect levels today at 5 feet in Palmyra.

Here's the boat in it's resting place before the adventure. Little did I know that the icicles hanging under the boat were a sign of what was to be discovered. They were standing vertical for the entire paddle.
